We’re pleased to share that the new Linear Accelerator (Linac) treatment facility at Western General Hospital has been shortlisted in this year’s Scottish Design Awards (SDA).
Finalist in the ‘Health Building or Project’ category, the new building houses radiation-shielded bunkers and oncology administration offices with connections to the existing hospital.
The project, delivered for RMF Health and NHS Lothian, provides modern treatment capability within a purpose-built facility which has been designed to exploit the natural terrain of the site. New treatment bunkers and supporting service accommodation have been dug into the rear of the sloping site, partially below ground level. These clinical spaces are surrounded on the ground floor by supporting staff and admin areas with views out to the street, and to a new shared landscaped courtyard. Similarly on the upper level, supporting office accommodation exploits natural light and views out.
The design seeks to provide a patient experience which is less clinical, and one within a more welcoming, restful environment which creates privacy, and some degree of distraction while patients are undergoing their treatment.

“We’re thrilled to be shortlisted for Scottish Design Awards again for a project which builds on our ongoing work with NHS Lothian to provide thoughtfully designed spaces that focus on improving both patient and staff experience. The new building provides increased cancer treatment capacity and support services in a carefully designed building, integrated into a complex existing site.”
This is HLM’s third consecutive year being shortlisted in this category, acknowledging our team’s ongoing commitment to providing world-class, innovatively designed healthcare facilities that truly improve the patient and staff experience.
The SDA are organized by Urban Realm and celebrate architecture, art and advertising brilliance across Scotland.
