HLM Architects is thrilled to announce its selection as the lead architect for the Charles Huang Advanced Technology Innovation Centre (CHATIC) refurbishment project at the University of Strathclyde. The refurbishment is set to transform the historic Student Union building on John’s Street in Glasgow. This project represents a significant milestone in the development of the Glasgow City Innovation District (GCID), reinforcing the district’s reputation as a global hub for cutting-edge technology and market-changing innovation.

HLM Architects is thrilled to announce its selection as the lead architect for the CHATIC refurbishment project at the University of Strathclyde.

The CHATIC project is poised to be a beacon of innovation and collaboration, attracting both public and private sector investments in research and development. The CHATIC building will be the University’s main digital, social and entrepreneurial hub. It will serve as a dynamic centre for nurturing start-ups and established businesses, driving inclusive economic growth for Glasgow and Scotland. The refurbishment of the old Student Union is an opportunity to reimagine this iconic building and expand upon a thriving technology and innovation zone within the wider GCID.

A Vision for Innovation and Collaboration

The refurbished building will be designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and innovation among staff, students, and industry partners. The aim is to revitalise the area into a vibrant and engaging space where people come to meet and choose to stay and work.

Our design approach will emphasise the creation of versatile spaces that transition seamlessly from collaborative areas to quiet, private zones for focused and confidential work. Every element of the design, from accessibility to lighting and digital connectivity, will be carefully considered to support the diverse needs of the building’s users.

CHATIC: A Hub for Social Innovation

In addition to its focus on technology and entrepreneurship, CHATIC will feature a dedicated Social Innovation Hub. This hub will connect the University’s Business, Policy, and Legal expertise with local communities and public bodies, enabling the translation of disruptive technologies into viable, socially responsible businesses and services. The Social Innovation Hub will play a crucial role in ensuring that the benefits of technological advancements are accessible to all, supporting the inclusive growth of Glasgow’s economy.

A Legacy for Glasgow

“We are honored to lead this transformative refurbishment project, which will not only enhance the University of Strathclyde’s campus but also contribute to the broader goals of the Glasgow City Innovation District. CHATIC is set to become a cornerstone of the district’s vibrant ecosystem, supporting the creation of high-potential, innovation-driven enterprises and fostering a culture of collaboration and creativity that will benefit Glasgow and beyond for years to come.” Ross Barrett, Design Director at HLM Architects.
