In recognition of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re hearing from two of our employees who are currently undertaking apprenticeships at HLM. First up, we’re finding out from Helen Grant, Marketing Executive in the Cardiff studio, how her experience of the Level 4 Digital Marketing course is going.

“I’ve been part of HLM’s marketing team for a couple of years, with no formal training – this course has given me the opportunity to fully understand the ‘why’. It’s also given me the opportunity to broaden my skill set and develop my knowledge to a higher level.”

What interested you in undertaking the Level 4 in Digital Marketing

I’ve been part of HLM’s marketing team for a couple of years, with no formal training – this course has given me the opportunity to fully understand the ‘why’. It’s also given me the opportunity to broaden my skill set and develop my knowledge to a higher level.

How is the course run?

It’s a blended learning style. Assessment styles range from assignments, portfolio-based evidence, professional discussions and online tests. It’s run remotely through Teams, with once-a-month 1:1 sessions with my trainer coach, where we discuss my development and I’m given tasks to complete before the next meeting.

What assessment is required to complete the course?

To complete the digital marketing level 4 course, we’re assessed in a variety of ways including written portfolio work, professional discussions, and controlled testing. Prior learning is also recognised, and my learner tutor engages with HLM to obtain witness testimonies.

What do you enjoy about the apprenticeship?

The main thing for me has been lots of light bulb moments where I have a greater understanding of the processes and the reasons ‘why’. Being able to apply it to my daily work has really given me confidence and a renewed sense of commitment. By constantly building on my skills, I feel more equipped to ‘bring something new’ to the table. I have worked at HLM for 16 years in various roles – you could say a jack of all trades, master of none – this course gives me the focus and the chance to be an expert in something.

How has the apprenticeship program helped you to develop new skills?

It has led me to think in different ways and how I approach certain marketing tasks.

Why would you recommend the apprenticeship?

Because you can learn while you work it’s the perfect way to gain a qualification… Educ8 as an organisation are great, the trainer coaches are fab – totally inclusive and make me feel confident in my ability to achieve my goal.

What I’ve really enjoyed is the range of topics the course covers, and the detail you go into for each module. There are also other learning modules such as the Welsh language, which has helped me brush up on my Welsh language skills!

How does the apprenticeship fit into your professional development?

The apprenticeship has helped me to develop new skills and focus on being an expert in my field, which has been a goal of mine over the last few years.
