After the successful conclusion of HLM’s transfer to an Employee Ownership Trust, and now having achieved his 40-year milestone at HLM, David, a former director and owner of the business, stepped down from the main board. He continues in full time employment with the business, as a strategic director, working alongside the new board in overseeing HLM’s portfolio of residential and mixed-use developments. He remains extensively involved with clients and projects, bringing passion, creativity and rigour to our design process.
David has experience across many sectors and disciplines in the built environment, including extensive involvement in architecture, urban design and masterplanning. Many of his projects involve collaboration between the private and public sectors, where his understanding of both quality and value brings benefits to both sides of a partnership.
He also works extensively as an expert, bringing his extensive knowledge and expertise, including aspects such as design standards, including for fire safety.
HLM’s thoughtful design ethos is embodied in David’s approach to the business of architecture and design. His passion for placemaking is centred around how great design, at all scales, contributes to making great building and places which foster inclusive mixed-use communities, high quality living standards, and sustainable ways of living and working. David’s education at Strathclyde University meant that energy efficient design is embedded in his work, and he was part of a small team that helped HLM to create early software tools to measure and encourage energy conservation, from the earliest stages of the design process (HLM-esp).
David also understands the importance of design efficiency, viability and deliverability of our outcomes, while also achieving the highest standards of design quality. As a consequence, HLM is known for being able to deliver viable outcomes, and to be able to build what we design.
