John has worked with HLM on projects for more than fifteen years and joined the practice as an Associate and Masterplanning Lead in June 2021. He is an experienced development masterplanner, urban designer and architectural designer, with a proven background in the delivery of award-winning masterplan projects.
Known for bold and exciting design vision, John has a clear and reliable commercial awareness relating to land and property assets, teamed with extensive knowledge of the planning system. He has experience in providing masterplan leadership to consultant teams for large-scale projects across a range of local authority, residential, new city frameworks, mixed use, education, government estates, aviation and other commercial development sectors.
John’s passion lies in exploring the option of reinvigorating towns and villages that we already have versus building brand-new communities. He believes that masterplanning can instigate and influence discussion on how revitalisation of our existing built-up areas can evolve, generating ideas and looking at ways to create exactly what we need. This perspective is critical in the planning of a carbon-neutral future and it is heartening to see how HLM can play a part in such crucial collaborations.

Aged fifteen, John had a still life shown in the RA summer exhibition, and would quite like to submit another piece, if there were quieter moments to explore his interests in painting, sculpture and photography – but it doesn’t look as if those moments will occur any time soon!
