Thames Christian School and Battersea Chapel has been named as a winner at the 2025 Civic Trust Awards.

Winning projects demonstrate excellence in architecture or design whilst being sustainable, accessible and providing a positive civic contribution.

Thames Christian School and Battersea Chapel, a co-located independent secondary school and Baptist chapel in Greater London, has been selected as one of just 39 winning  projects from over 300 international and national submissions for the prestigious 2025 Civic Trust Awards. This remarkable achievement places the project amongst an elite group of buildings celebrated for their architectural excellence and civic value. Winners demonstrate excellence in architecture or design whilst being sustainable, accessible and providing a positive civic contribution.

The final accolade, whether an Award or a Highly Commended status, will be revealed at the 66th Annual Civic Trust Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 4, 2025.

An Architectural Triumph in Wandsworth’s Regeneration

Designed by Henley Halebrown, and delivered by HLM Architects, this independent secondary school and Baptist Chapel stands as a testament to civic character, thoughtful design and tranquility. Nestled within the heart of Wandsworth’s York Gardens regeneration area, this 6-storey, facility provides a tranquil yet striking presence amidst the dynamic cityscape.

The school not only accommodates 430 students, including secondary students, SEN admissions, and a workplace nursery, but also serves as a cornerstone for community engagement. Its dignified façade and thoughtfully crafted spaces underscore its civic character while seamlessly integrating into its context

Award-Winning Design: A Legacy of Excellence

Having already been honoured with the RIBA London Award and RIBA National Award in 2024, the Thames Christian School and Battersea Chapel has firmly established itself as an exemplar of outstanding architecture. These accolades recognize its ability to balance creativity, practicality, and meaningful community contribution.

A Thoughtful Approach to Civic and Educational Design

Every element of the design reflects meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to fostering learning, tranquillity, and community. From the uplifting courtyard entrance, carefully positioned to preserve views of existing trees, to the inspiring chapel spaces that invite contemplation and engagement, the building harmonizes its dual functions with creative finesse.
