As award season continues, we are delighted to have two projects for the University of Sheffield, The Transformer and The Concourse, shortlisted in this year’s Sheffield Design Awards.

Two of HLM’s projects for the University of Sheffield have been shortlisted in the Sheffield Design Awards 2022.  The Transformer in the Large Project Award and The Concourse in the Contribution to Open Spaces Award.

The Sheffield Design Awards were established for the benefit of the public and City of Sheffield and and are given to buildings and open spaces that have excellent architectural standards and make a substantial contribution to the local environment and we are delighted to have two of our University of Sheffield projects shortlisted.

Large Project Awards:  The Transformer, University of Sheffield

The building design celebrates the University of Sheffield’s commitment to promoting sustainability. The combination of façade materials replicates the contrast between the heavy grade II* listed wall with the delicacy of the listed Arts Tower fenestration. This new facility gives the University resilience and energy security, energy cost savings and has reduced its carbon emissions in-line with the University’s carbon management plan.

Contribution to Open Spaces Awards:  The Concourse, University of Sheffield

Winner of the FX International Design Outside Space Award, the new public realm area at the University of Sheffield brings it back to life as a vibrant, social and meaningful space. It includes over 3000m sq of new paving, a dynamic lighting scheme, bespoke seating, biodiversity and seasonal interest through the planting scheme. Our landscape team created an important civic space within the campus where people want to stay and socialise, providing an animated space during the day and at night.

Winners will be announced at a awards ceremony on the 10 November – fingers crossed and good luck to all the finalists!
