We are pleased to share that we’ve been awarded two titles in this year’s Offsite awards.
On Tuesday, at the Offsite Awards, we were delighted to be named the winners in two categories – Architect of the Year and Winner of Winners (joint with B&K Structures, Engenuiti and Stora Enso).
‘Architect of the Year’ recognises practices or individuals who have used an offsite approach as a defining feature within a completed building in the UK, with particular emphasis on originality of design and inspirational adoption of offsite materials.
From the named winning projects across all categories, judges then selected an overall ‘Winner of Winners’, the project which was scored highest throughout the award process.
Our submissions for the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) were central to both of these awards. The BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ NMIS Headquarters is a unique, iconic flagship facility which places Scotland firmly at the front of advanced manufacturing innovation. Its design and delivery reflects this through the creative use of MMC for greater efficiency through repetitive elements, minimised material use and wastage, and opportunity for future expansion. The project is an example of pushing the boundaries of offsite construction to achieve unique, world-class facilities.
The design uses recycled, long-life and robust materials and the implementation of significant, cutting edge, sustainable design strategies. The result is a highly efficient, sustainable building which can be easily adapted in the future if needed, due to clever use of prefabricated and modular components, including: a diagrid glulam timber frame, CLT deck, and ‘pods’ to create various workspaces. Standardisation, repetitive elements and optimisation of material dimensions all allowed for the extensive use of offsite fabrication.
Anne Daw, Head of MMC Delivery, who was part of the ‘Designing for Offsite’ panel discussion earlier in the day, commented:
“What a fabulous result! I’m so proud to be a part of such a great and talented team. NMIS is a great example of an innovative design which brings together key elements of the future of construction, sustainability and offsite manufacture. Its design is evidence of both how far the technology within offsite manufacture and design has developed, and how our team has adopted this approach.”
These awards firmly recognise our ambitions in adopting Offsite and MMC towards a more sustainable future of the built environment, while creating unique and inspiring pieces of architecture.
Co-located with the Offsite Expo, the awards celebrate the best in design and technology used in creating outstanding, forward-thinking offsite projects.
