HLM Architects named Top 20 Best Scottish Architectural Practices
Urban Realm’s annual UR100 ranking is more than a recognition of scale or prestige; it celebrates the architectural practices driving the most impactful change in the built environment. By identifying standout practices across retrofit, Passivhaus innovation, and employee ownership, the 2024 UR100 underscores the values that define modern architecture.
Andrew Hadden, Associate at HLM Architects and President of the Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA), provided insight into the firm’s recognition:
“Higher education institutions are under immense pressure to deliver high-quality learning, teaching, and research environments while navigating challenges such as rising construction costs, carbon reduction targets, and estate management. We have been tackling these pressures through innovative retrofit projects, which not only save on carbon and capital costs but also improve building utilization to deliver sustainable outcomes.”
The Glasgow studio’s work in estate rationalism is setting new standards in efficiency and sustainability for large-scale organizations. Notably, the firm’s retrofit of the former student union at the University of Strathclyde stands out as a flagship project. This development, which will house the Centre for Health and Technology Innovation and Commercialisation (CHATIC), combines forward-thinking design with a deep respect for the building’s cultural legacy.

A Commitment to Thoughtful Design
HLM Architects is known for its philosophy of creating responsive, human-centered designs rather than adhering to a fixed “signature style.” Each project reflects the unique needs of its client, site, and context, aligning with our broader mission to build better places for people.
A key differentiator for the firm is its use of innovative tools such as HLM_Place, a digital tool developed for effective estate management. This toolkit supports informed decision-making, allowing clients to achieve both operational efficiency and long-term sustainability goals.
Andrew Hadden adds:
“Our work with the University of Strathclyde’s CHATIC project reflects a strong alignment with the Net Zero Public Sector Building Standard and the aspirations of sustainable development. Beyond environmental targets, our design narrative and interior strategy preserve the building’s historical and cultural importance while creating opportunities for collaboration with industry leaders.”
We are incredibly proud to be acknowledged alongside so many inspiring practices. With projects spanning sectors including education, healthcare, and public estates, the firm remains at the forefront of meaningful and impactful design. As we enter 2025, we look forward to continuing our work in reshaping and enriching the architectural landscape in Scotland and beyond.
