HLM’s design for the Linear Accelerator facility at Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, has been awarded the Silver Award in the Healthcare category of the Scottish Design Awards (SDA).

Ross Barrett, Design Director, commented:

“We are delighted to pick up another Scottish Design Award, reflecting our growing reputation for thoughtful, sustainable design. It’s also a great testament to our client at NHS Lothian, and the efforts of the whole RMF team”.

The winning project marks the third consecutive year that the Glasgow team have had a healthcare project in the shortlist.

Judges praised the project, commenting that it is “a lovely elevation. The material palette and treatment of brick stand out”.

Delivered for RMF Health and NHS Lothian, the Linac unit utilises the layout of the site, with treatment bunkers partially built into the hillside.

While functionality is key, a main driver of the project was to create a welcoming and restful environment for patients undergoing treatment. Connection with nature and the outside were fundamental; the building wraps around an internal courtyard as well as exploiting natural lighting and views in the office accommodation.
