The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) headquarters has been highly commended at the Wood Awards.

“This recognition is a clear indicator of how we are striving towards sustainable architecture across our business.”

Submitted into the Commercial and Leisure category as a collaborative effort with B&K Structures, Stora Enso and Engenuiti, NMIS was highly commended for the Structural Award.

We are delighted to be recognized in these awards for the first time with NMIS. Receiving this commendation demonstrates our practice’s commitment to the use of natural, renewable materials in achieving our sustainability goals.

The presenter read, “The highly commended project, for its expressive use of glulam that creates an inspiring architectural statement, is NMIS Glasgow from HLM Architects.”

NMIS headquarters pushes the boundaries for the application of engineered timber, creating a BREEAM Outstanding, inspirational learning environment with a unique structural identity.

Aiming to promote collaborative working, sustainability and innovation, the facility’s design maximises the technical and aesthetic capabilities of engineered timber, creating an advanced two-storey structure that is carbon neutral and optimised for productivity.

Panoramic glazing, diagonal glulam columns and an extensive diagrid roof define the building’s striking appearance. Highly visible externally and internally, the dramatic glulam structure provides a wide column-free space that maximises flexibility and the potential for reconfiguration.

Framing the view into the facility, the glulam structure creates an emblematic architectural statement for the project, exemplifying NMIS’ values of innovation and sustainability.

Design Director and Project Lead, Ross Barrett, commented:

“This recognition is a clear indicator of how we are striving towards sustainable architecture across our business. To be highly commended, out of 300 entries, is a great achievement and I speak on behalf of the entire project team when I say we are truly proud of this.”
