“We’re incredibly proud to have been involved in this project, which will shape the future of Scotland’s manufacturing and innovation by bringing together industry, academia and public sector bodies.”
We are delighted to pick up this important award, recognising our Glasgow team’s thoughtful design of the flagship scheme which places Scotland firmly on the map as a global leader in advanced manufacturing. From its vibrant purple roof and cladding which reflects the landscapes of heather found in Scotland, to the diagrid glulam timber frame and CLT deck, NMIS’ unique structural identity is firmly rooted in its locality.
Described as ‘Outstanding’ by the judges, our design for NMIS’s HQ fully embodies the essence of the scheme; an open and collaborative environment, where knowledge and creativity can be shared. They further commented:
“The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland project was a standout, with its striking design and low impact on the environment. The building is designed to be flexible, extendable and creates a superb collaborative working environment. “
Ross Barrett, Design Director and Project Lead, commented:
“We’re incredibly proud to have been involved in this project, which will shape the future of Scotland’s manufacturing and innovation by bringing together industry, academia and public sector bodies. This, and the wider Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland, will be instrumental in Scotland’s positioning, both in industry and in its commitment to sustainability.”
The energy carbon neutral facility, based at the new Netherton Campus next to Glasgow Airport, provides a high-quality environment that supports wellbeing, fosters collaboration, and promotes sustainability. Its design delivers a range of climate mitigation and adaptation solutions, including rain gardens, rainwater harvesting, SUDS and a green roof to encourage biodiversity. The building seeks to create a healthy workplace with extensive natural daylight, an exposed timber glulam frame, internal tree planting, and a bespoke internal green wall.
NMIS is a partnership between the University of Strathclyde, the Advanced Forming Research Centre, High Value Manufacturing Catapult, Skills Development Scotland and Scottish Enterprise which aims to provide an industry-led centre of manufacturing expertise where industry, academia and public sector support bodies work together. This facility will provide a hub for the transformation of skills, productivity and innovation, making Scotland a magnet for investment.
