The Marriott hotel in Maida Vale underwent a significant refurbishment which commenced in 2016. Initially, all guestrooms were refurbished (by others) and HLM were commissioned to design the front of house and conference and banqueting areas of the hotel. Our brief was to develop and deliver an interior design concept which would create a destination for the community, generate sales opportunities, and elevate the hotels standing within the market.

Design Approach

Taking inspiration from the local context of Maida Vale and the globally renowned Abbey Road Studios, the Lobby, Conferencing and Banqueting areas were redesigned to uplift and regenerate the ground floor through the addition of playful elements to the hotel’s public areas while establishing continuity throughout the various spaces.

The design further explores the themes of music and sound, translating research into a narrative through materials, texture, forms, style and colour.
Taking influence from equipment, vinyl, cassette tapes, musical symbols and sound vibrations, we interpreted these in a contemporary format to create subtle references within the interior via materiality, texture, forms and style.

Colour palettes are inspired by retro influences with playful details added across the spaces. The Abbey Road Studios encompass a quirky backdrop alongside references to past music themes and materials.

With a mix of business and leisure guests, as well as airline crew, the design aspires to speak to all the hotel’s clientele through touches of elegance and refinement that enhance the guest experience, ensuring design creativity whilst upholding the brand vision.
