As an International hotel brand with a reputation for excellence, the arrival of Radisson Blu as part of the Heart of the City development in Sheffield, is expected to attract new business opportunities into the city, while raising its profile as an attractive destination.

Design Approach

Working closely with heritage specialists, the Council and consultants, HLM’s concept design responds to and enhances the architectural history of the site.

Accommodating visitors with stylish facilities for both work and relaxation, the hotel is housed behind the charming facades of Palatine Chambers and City Mews. Replacing Barkers Pool House on Burgess Street is a second complementary building, containing the majority of the hotel’s 154 bedrooms.

Retaining the Pinstone Street facade, the massing of the Hotel has been developed to respond to the surrounding context by stepping away from the Peace Gardens, towards John Lewis and echoing the roof form of the historic roofscape, through a contemporary mansard rooftop extension with French Gothic inspired turrets.

Delia Harmston, studio director at HLM Architects, said: “The design carefully combines new and old to knit the new hotel architecture into the historic city fabric. We are hugely proud to have been involved from inception through to completion on this significant and complex development overlooking Sheffield’s most prominent public space – the Peace Gardens. Without a doubt, the best views in the city are from the new roof top bar.”

Honouring Sheffield’s Unique Character

The design concept draws inspiration from Sheffield’s heritage as the Steel City and its proximity to the Peak District, blending elements of the city’s past and present into a cohesive and abstract celebration.

Engaging Textures and Local Imagery in Guestrooms

Bedrooms feature layered textures to engage guests, complemented by local photography capturing iconic moments from the area, enhancing the sense of place and connection.

Inspiring Design in Transitional Spaces

Corridors feature a contemplative carpet design, described as either a cloudscape or rock formations, to inspire guests during their stay.

Interior Design Reflecting Local Heritage

Interiors emphasize texture, color, and pattern, juxtaposing the soft heathers of local moorland with steel elements from Sheffield’s industrial heritage, including feature ceilings mimicking the forms of nearby reservoirs.

Integrating Nature and Industry in Interior Design

Rugs depict the Peak District’s topography, providing a vibrant base for sophisticated furniture. Steel structures in the furniture represent the city’s industrial heritage, while materials like timber, mirror, and stone reflect its diverse modern character.

Upholding Radisson Brand Standards with a Sheffield Twist

Designs adhere to Radisson’s guestroom typology, space planning, and performance specifications, creating a hotel that distinctly represents Sheffield.

A Unique Rooftop Culinary Experience

The new rooftop bar and restaurant offer unparalleled views of Sheffield, providing a sophisticated terrace experience. The Governor Gupta restaurant combines a premium yet casual atmosphere with a club lounge-inspired interior.

Inviting and Rich Interior Palette

The restaurant’s design features a decadent palette of timber and stone, enriched with burgundy and forest tones. The artwork displays curious characters and abstract Indian heritage, adding to the dining experience.

Ben Carrack, associate at HLM Architects and Project Lead: “The end result is something I am incredibly proud to have been involved with. It has been a privilege to work on such a significant project, not just for HLM, but also for our city.”

Creating a Courtyard Oasis in the City

The hotel courtyard design offers a serene spill-out space from the hotel and nearby retail units, creating a microclimate enhanced by thoughtful materials and planting.

Versatile and Social Outdoor Spaces

The courtyard will be a versatile area for dining, gathering, and relaxation, featuring shade-tolerant plants that create a lush and vibrant atmosphere, complemented by Sheffield-inspired hardscape materials and an illuminating lighting strategy.
