Since joining HLM’s Sheffield studio in 2015, Karl’s work has been predominantly focused on the higher education sector, ranging from small-scale refurbishment to create innovative new teaching spaces through to large-scale new buildings. He leads on strategic asset masterplans, feasibility studies and concept design through to detailed design and production of construction information.

Karl was instrumental in developing the practice’s in-house sustainability strategy, as well as leading the practice’s involvement in the Circular Twin initiative to promote net zero carbon projects. He was nominated for the AJ100 ‘Sustainability Champion of the Year 2022’

Karl excels at engaging with clients and stakeholders to understand and interpret their aspirations, and he thrives in solving complex design challenges with a pragmatic, evidence-lead, humanist approach to architecture.

Did you know?
Karl tries to live the ‘Good Life’ and has turned his garden in to an allotment and wildflower garden, so that he can be more self-sufficient. As well as being an avid board-gamer, he is always looking to try a new hobby. He recently played his first ever gig, enjoys bouldering and climbing and has been known to step up to the plate for the Sheffield Bladerunners Baseball Club!
