Our Interior Architects worked hard to create modern spaces for collaborative research.
Our Interior Architects worked hard to create modern spaces for collaborative research and flexible multi-functional learning areas. The new faculty of social sciences brings 5 department together into a world class facility.
“The Wave” is a new low-energy, highly sustainable facility for the University of Sheffield that is an all-electric, net-zero carbon in operation enabled building. Supporting the university’s ambition to reach net zero across the estate by 2030, the Wave has recently achieved BREEAM Outstanding Accreditation. The design embraces the principles of active learning with teaching spaces shared between five departments to encourage collaboration, reducing spatial and energy requirements and creating a strong faculty identity. The architecture of the building reflects the Social Sciences, with overlapping curved floorplates organised around a central atrium with an interdisciplinary research hub at its heart, allowing academics to work together to explore key challenges facing society today.
The coherent design strategy uses similar forms, details and materials throughout to create links between the internal spaces, the architectural form and the landscape. The design has also specifically considered inclusivity and users mental health and wellbeing and can be easily reconfigured to ensure future flexibility.
The completed building adds social value for academics and the local community with a neighbourhood pocket park that enhances biodiversity and café that is open to the public.
