HLM Architects have been recognised by the judges of the Civic Trust Awards 2021 for the ‘excellent execution’ and the ‘simplicity of the hard landscaping’ in the design of The Concourse, University of Sheffield, after being named as a regional finalist.
The awards celebrate excellence in architecture and environmental design, and also reward projects that offer a positive cultural, social, economic or environmental benefit to their local communities.
The judges were impressed with how the existing flyover, originally created by Arup in the 1960s and a 1972 recipient of a Civic Trust Award, has been used as a catalyst for design to turn the University campus into a destination that ‘is full of life and colour’. The landscaping was also highly praised for its ‘very beautiful’ and ‘imaginative’ planting scheme which is delivered in a ‘highly contemporary and sleek way’.
The lighting design by Arup was commended as ‘possibly the most striking aspect of the scheme’, due to the subtle integration of strips of lighting along the edges of the soffits and seating which can also be adapted in terms of lux and colour for different events and times of the year.
