HLM Architects has further strengthened its leadership team with the promotion of Duncan Thomas. Based in the Sheffield studio, Duncan has taken up the role Associate – Masterplanner & Architect.
“The opportunities placemaking and masterplanning present to address the climate and biodiversity emergencies are more vital now than ever.”
Having initially joined HLM as Architect in June 2022, Duncan brings over 15 years’ proven experience of leading design teams in both residential and commercial sector development on a wide variety of masterplanning, urban design and building projects across the globe. He is passionate about building strong communities designed to positively respond to the climate crisis – using placemaking to create memorable spaces that benefit the environment as well as health and wellbeing. Duncan was instrumental in creating the vision and strategy for South Yorkshire’s innovation district, with the aim of building a world-class centre of innovation in advanced manufacturing and life sciences that can also help drive sustainable and inclusive regional economic growth.
Duncan said:
“It’s a real honour to become part of the team of associates at HLM. I’m looking forward to help grow and shape the masterplanning offer here. The opportunities placemaking and masterplanning present to address the climate and biodiversity emergencies are more vital now than ever. We are committed to using our passion and energy to meet this challenge through the creation of memorable, thriving, healthy places with a strong sense of community.”
Richard O’Neil, HLM Chair, commented, “I am excited to work with Duncan in his new role as Associate, and am certain that he will play a vital role in driving the direction of HLM’s growing UK-wide portfolio and our continued success and reputation as a leader in our field.”
Duncan’s promotion follows John Richards’ appointment in 2022 to Head of Masterplanning and Urban Design. These appointments support our holistic approach to projects at local, national and global level, with sustainable communities at the heart.
