Leading the Lecture Theatre
Refurbishment Programme

The refurbishment of the Stevenson Lecture Theatre for the School of Engineering is the first project of the universities’ Theatre Refurbishment Programme. Our design approach reimagined the space to enhance accessibility, student experience, and environmental performance, creating a welcoming, vibrant environment for teaching and learning. By introducing warmth, colour, and texture, we fostered collaboration and active learning, while our integrated design process ensured a cohesive outcome that aligns with the School of Engineering’s vision. The result is a thoughtfully refurbished theatre that meets current and future needs, supporting engagement, comfort, and a sense of community.

The Stevenson Lecture Theatre was all about balance. We’ve transformed the space to celebrate its mid-century character while supporting modern teaching and learning methods. By introducing warmth, colour, and texture, we’ve created an inspiring, welcoming environment that reflects the University’s commitment to high-quality, thoughtfully designed learning spaces.

Revealing the 1950’s ceiling structure

A key focus of the redesign was the reinstatement of the 1950s ceiling structure, now fully exposed to form a striking architectural feature. Enhanced with acoustic spray and bespoke lighting, this intervention not only improves acoustic performance but also reinforces the theatre’s distinctive midcentury identity.
