We want everyone to flourish and be the best they can be
We believe we’ve created not only a great place to work but also a place where every person can grow. We’re continuously exploring and learning, making sure everyone feels empowered with the freedom to progress in a role that truly stimulates and inspires.
Our creativity and our direction are driven by the different perspectives of the individuals in our team. We’re passionate about enabling more social inclusion not just within our own business but across our wider profession. This starts with engaging early with schools, the way we recruit and how we develop lifelong skills through our Academy.
We think we’ve got the balance right with our award winning Lifestyle Package, flexible working arrangements, Well-Being programme and socialising calendar and have received many awards for being a great employer, voted by our staff. But we never take it for granted that we’ve done enough. Maintaining a workplace culture where everyone feels fairly rewarded, supported and valued will always be our goal.
The HLM Academy
The HLM Academy supports everyone along their career journey, capturing passions, driving innovation and equipping individuals with skills to navigate an ever-evolving world. It’s underpinned by a skills and behaviour framework and centred around our core values. Everyone is enrolled on day one, stepping into a bespoke learning pathway with insight from a profiling tool called PROPHET; recognising that all individuals are unique.
The Academy is built on the principle that everyone is a leader with development plans crafted through the levels of Leading Self, Leading Others, Leading Growth and Leading the Future. Our programmes help individuals realise their potential through a focussed series of activities and mentoring where skills are developed from business acumen to emotional intelligence. The Academy puts learning and development at the heart of everything we do, providing equality of opportunity for everyone.
AJ100 Employer of the Year 2020
Earlier this year, we were delighted to be crowned AJ100’s Employer of the Year which recognises the best practice for employees, assessing issues such as staff satisfaction, workplace culture, benefits and staff turnover.
The judges said, ‘this practice has a clear commitment to developing talent, both beyond the practice and right the way through the business and has created an organisation where employees evidently feel motivated and valued.’
Apprenticeships, Work Experience and Graduate Programmes
Attracting talent from the widest arena from apprentices to retirees
Our practice is built on a diversity of skills and we’ve a particular keen focus on Social Mobility; inspiring people who might never have thought about a career in architecture or even studying at university. We’re supporters and active participants of Founders4Schools and Ambassadors for Developing the Young Workforce. We sponsor local school events, attend career fairs, mentor students, tutor, host workshops and mock interviews and run a national school work placement programme. We support students throughout their studies with year out placements through to final exams and we’re a Collaborative Partner Practice with the University of Sheffield.
HLM was part of the Trailblazer Group and in June 2018 created the UK’s first Architecture Apprenticeship Standards. Representing a milestone achievement for our profession, this provide an alternative and innovative route to entry, enabling individuals to earn while they learn and not be hindered with the financial burden of a long course. Existing students can also study their Part 2 and 3 through the apprenticeship route. There are two standards – Level 6 / Architectural Assistant (Part 1) and Level 7 / Architect (Part 2 and 3).
"Thank you so much for yesterday, the day was a great success and the school staff, myself and the pupils all really appreciate it. One student did say to me she had changed her mind about what she wanted to be and would like to be an Architect in the future. Please do extend my thanks to your colleagues, you were fantastic, so encouraging and inspirational"
I have really enjoyed these past 2 weeks and I hope that maybe I could come in again, may be over the holidays. I just don’t want to go back to school after these fantastic 2 weeks
Work Experience Student
“I found the experience extremely rewarding as I haven’t done anything like this before. Engaging directly with the school pupils helped me to build on my confidence in presenting HLM and what we do. It was a valuable experience that can be transferred to workshops for education or community projects. I look forward to being part of future events.”
"At HLM wisdom is shared generously through formal academy initiatives and informal day to day conversations. Support by senior members of staff have helped me to forge my own path in the business, giving me the time, space and trust to grow.”
“I am delighted to have been promoted and am pleased to receive this recognition of my contribution. I was very pleased to be mentored by our Managing Director. She provided me with a pathway and we had monthly catch up meetings to check on progression.”
