Emergency services

Emergency Services Architects, HLM Architects

Our design of community-based emergency and blue light facilities takes a deep operational understanding. We deliver emergency services provision that enables staff to meet the highest standards in demanding roles, and supports their health and wellbeing.

Our operationally effective approach

While our fire station designs have won architectural awards, we’re most proud that firefighter turnout times have improved in the stations we design.

Our approach to emergency services design is operationally-led. We invest time and resources into understanding the operational requirements and processes of the blue light and emergency services we work with. We design buildings around their most important needs to enable staff to deliver their work efficiently and safely – all while caring for their wellbeing and encouraging personal growth.

One of the most impactful learning experiences I’ve had as an emergency services architect was joining a 12-hour shift in a ‘Firefighter for a Day’ programme with the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service. This immersive experience gave our team invaluable insight into the wellbeing needs of firefighters – from training and post-incident decompression to teamwork, gender considerations, and the critical importance of decontamination.

Our expertise

Tri-service stations provide a base for all three blue light services and much-needed community-accessible facilities. The tri-service approach is intended to make financial savings, better manage risk, and improve the resilience of emergency services. Creating a central hub improves time efficiencies, offers more space and resources, and – where possible – provides room for community gatherings.

We work closely with all services to ensure their visions are realised, placing them at the heart of the communities they serve and enabling people to lead safe, fulfilling lives.

We have decades of operational expertise designing and delivering fire provisions where staff can perform to the very highest standards.

Our thoughtful design approach ensures each fire station is specific to the operational needs of the service, the community they serve, and fully supports the wellbeing of their staff.

Our accumulated knowledge and experience in this specialist sector helped us develop a universal decontamination process and flow capable of being replicated across future stations. Influenced by the pillars of the FBU DECON guidance, we’re with national and international organisations working in this sector.

We design and deliver emergency services headquarters buildings for optimised service efficiencies. Our designs take inspiration and lessons learnt from some of the best fire stations and training facilities across Ireland and the UK.

While headquarters generally provide the administrative backbone of emergency service typologies, they’re also important operational command functions – from silver command suites in district headquarters to emergency call receiving centres, and gold command suites, major incident, and joint operational facilities in provincial, county and authority headquarters.

Well trained staff are essential for all emergency services. Top quality training facilities for front-line activities, staff safety, and continuing professional development are key requirements for all emergency services.

Over the years, we’ve worked with training delivery teams within the emergency services to develop baseline training facilities supplemented with a full range of bespoke solutions for each individual specialism. Our work on dual and tri-service facilities has allowed the creation of joint service training spaces and incident simulation.

Workshops are the second line of emergency service delivery – providing integral support with skilled technicians delivering tested, safe equipment to assist front-line delivery.

With our emergency service clients, we’ve developed workshop provisions that cover the full range of servicing, testing and logistics. Covering everything from vehicle repairs and servicing, MOT & PSV testing. From BA servicing and refilling, kit and equipment decontamination and repair, to communication equipment repairs, and lab environments for the testing of new equipment.
