We design memorable spaces for better living, working, learning teaching, healing and caring. Our team offers a complete interior design service, complementing architecture and landscape to create beautiful, functional, and sustainable places.

HLM’s interior design team thoughtfully integrates with the architectural vision. We work hand-in-hand with architects, landscape architects, engineers, and our clients. Our interior design philosophy centres people’s mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. We balance these essential human needs, with natural elements and technological innovations.

Our expertise

Interior design has the power to significantly influence our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

Our thoughtful design process brings together three aspects to positively influence the wellbeing of everyone who uses our spaces in every sector; aesthetic, cognitive and contextual. Aesthetics shape the visual and sensory experience, impacting emotions and comfort. Cognitive design focuses on spatial organisation and layout to influence behaviour, safety and efficiency. And context looks outwards to create meaningful connections to local heritage and landscape. Fostering a sense of belonging to help people feel connected, grounded and inspired.

We put people first in every space we design, our interior solutions begin with user engagement to understand the needs of the building users.

HLM puts sustainability and wellbeing at the centre of our design process. We aren’t ticking boxes, we’re committed to making a difference.

Our approach is to aim for net zero carbon on every project. We minimise embodied carbon by specifying low carbon, locally sourced, recycled or recyclable materials. We work closely with manufacturers and suppliers to ensure their products meet the required sustainability outcomes of our design.

We follow circular economy principles by preserving and repurposing existing finishes, furniture and fit-out elements wherever we can. Our team designs with durability and adaptability in mind – working with our clients and design teams to specify long-life materials, demountable partitions, and innovative modular systems.

We all know the importance of retrofitting our existing buildings to significantly reduce our carbon footprint, rejuvenate our communities, and deliver cost and time savings. However, retrofit does come with challenges.

We adopt a collaborative interior-led methodology to retrofit; one that embraces opportunities and overcomes challenges. Working with our conservation specialists, we focus heavily on the early stages of each project, thoroughly investigating the space and analysing the structure and condition. This helps us develop a comprehensive brief, navigate challenges, and reduce the risk of unforeseen problems and additional costs later on.

Our successful retrofit projects celebrate existing architectural elements and contribute to a more sustainable, resilient built environment. We create cost-effective, functional and delightful spaces that enhance people’s wellbeing and revitalise our heritage.

Biophilic design has reshaped how we think about and experience interior spaces. It’s a philosophy that brings elements of the natural world into our built environments, fostering connections that go beyond the visual to create an atmosphere both welcoming and grounding.

At its core, biophilic design is about creating environments that feel alive, that breathe, and that offer sanctuary. Through nature-inspired design choices, we have the ability to shape spaces that support not only productivity and functionality but also human resilience and connection. As interior designers, our role goes beyond crafting beautiful spaces; it’s about creating environments that inspire and sustain those who inhabit them.
