HLM Architects shortlisted for 2 Construction News Awards

We’re pleased to share that our design for the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) has been shortlisted in two categories of the Construction News (CN) Awards 2024.

Having been awarded a variety of awards including Offsite and Structural Timber, NMIS is in the finalists for two specialist titles at the CN awards: Low Carbon Project of the Year and MMC Project of the Year.

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland is an exemplar for low-carbon construction and the use of Modern Methods of Construction in creating unique, landmark projects. A centre of innovation, excellence and collaboration, NMIS’s structure is an embodiment of everything that it represents, and places Scotland firmly as a global leader in advanced manufacturing. [

The Low Carbon Project of the Year category recognises projects which have achieved or exceeded planned carbon targets and are exemplars for low-carbon construction. With sustainability centre to the project’s brief, NMIS uses a range of low-carbon techniques, technologies and practices to achieve impressively low outcomes and carbon-neutrality. These include making use of 100% renewable onsite-generated energy, prioritising passive measures and using responsibly sourced timber for the building’s unique diagrid frame.

Judges will be looking for utilisation of alternative construction practices while achieving high standards in the MMC Project of the Year category. NMIS’s design resulted in the use of 6 out of seven MMC categories, and a Pre-Manufactured Value of 60%, which is high for this building typology.

NMIS has been recognised in multiple industry and regional awards since opening in 2023. These include the Building Awards, Offsite Awards, Herald Property Awards, Glasgow Institute of Architects Awards and Scottish Property Awards.

Good luck to all the finalists who can be found listed here.
