It’s hard to believe that over a decade has passed since Ysbyty Cwm Cynon opened its doors to the people of the Cynon Valley. Officially unveiled in 2012, the hospital marked a pivotal moment not just in the regeneration of this proud Welsh ex-mining valley community, but in the journey of HLM Architects – acting as the catalyst for the creation of our now thriving Cardiff studio.
Ysbyty Cwm Cynon was designed to raise the bar for health provision in the valley.
Designed with the ambition of replacing outdated and scattered healthcare facilities, this purpose-built hospital consolidated services into one accessible location. From rehabilitation to mental health support, therapies to outpatient care, Ysbyty Cwm Cynon was designed to raise the bar for health provision in the valley. It’s a building that’s rooted in empathy – and one that helped us understand the true power of inclusive, locally engaged design.
Winning the LABC Cymru South Wales Building Excellence Award in 2013, the project was delivered through extensive collaboration with local stakeholders. This wasn’t just about bricks and mortar – it was about rebuilding a sense of local pride. The Cynon Valley, a region shaped by its mining past, had long deserved investment and infrastructure that reflected the value of its people. This hospital became a symbol of that renewal.
Ownership by community & staff has meant that the building has integrated well into the environment and the local community.

Cynon Valley Hospital is a building rooted in empathy and one that helped us understand the true power of inclusive, locally engaged design.
The architecture itself mirrors the landscape it serves. With a distinctive curved radial layout aligned to the River Cynon, the building embraces its valley setting, and enhances a welcoming and clear arrival through a stepped design of green and pitched roofs, echoing nearby housing and topography. Wings fan out around landscaped courtyards, minimising the perception of mass and providing peaceful glimpses of the surrounding hills. These aren’t just aesthetic choices – they are integral to the hospital’s therapeutic mission.
Inside, our aim was to remove any hint of institutional coldness. Natural daylight floods the interior. Pops of colour and public artworks add warmth and humanity. A central atrium – the “hospital street” – acts as a wayfinding anchor, designed to reduce perceived walking distances and promote intuitive navigation. Wayfinding, in fact, was considered with great care – a fundamental part of user dignity and comfort.
Standardised, flexible ward templates mean the building has evolved with changing care models. And it has endured – something we take immense pride in.
Looking back, Ysbyty Cwm Cynon is more than a project – it’s a legacy. It launched our presence in Cardiff and across Wales and proved that when we design with community at the heart, we can make places that heal in more ways than one.
And most importantly, it continues to serve – quietly, purposefully – just as it was always intended. This is Thoughtful Design, it’s in our nature.
It is so great to see how the building has stood the test of time over the last 13 years. Our design has leant itself to changes in care and also stood up to the challenging Welsh climate. A real testament to modern healthcare design.
