The Belfast studio is proud to be participating in the Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA), Professional Insights Programme 2024/25, an initiative designed to support architecture students from Ulster University and Queen’s University Belfast as they prepare for their professional careers. This programme provides students with a structured series of interactive sessions that offer valuable exposure to real-world architectural practice. By covering essential aspects of the profession, these sessions equip students with the knowledge and experience they need to transition smoothly into the industry.
One of the key components of the programme is site visits, which allow students to experience live construction projects firsthand. Rich Williams, alongside Adéla Vagova, Micheal Murphy, and four students, led a visit to Newbridge Integrated College, a project currently under construction in partnership with Ganson UK. This visit provided students with an opportunity to observe the complexities of site operations and gain an understanding of how architectural designs are translated into built environments.
Another important aspect of the programme is resourcing and business administration. Nicola McKay, our Belfast Studio Director led a session focused on the operational side of architectural practice, offering insights into how firms manage resources to ensure projects are delivered efficiently and effectively. Understanding the business aspects of architecture is crucial for students as they prepare to enter the workforce.
The programme also includes an exploration of the process of winning work and procurement. Kathryn Dowse guided students through the tender process and procurement routes, helping them understand the strategies firms use to secure and manage projects. This session provided an invaluable perspective on the competitive nature of the industry and the importance of strong business acumen in architectural practice.
Material selection and design thinking are also integral to the programme. Andrew Abraham and Kevin O’Neill facilitated a design forum on the Dromore Place Plan, which was presented by Chris McNabb. This session encouraged students to engage with real-world design challenges, developing innovative solutions and critical thinking skills essential for their future careers.

Through this programme, students not only learn about the design aspects of architecture but also gain a deeper understanding of the business and operational elements that are essential for a successful career in the field. By bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice, our aims to support the next generation of architects in developing the skills and confidence they need to thrive in the industry.
