The redevelopment of Prince Charles Hospital (PCH), recently reached another significant milestone as the new Day Surgery facility was officially handed over, signalling the completion of Phase 3 of the major investment programme funded by Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government.
The new Day Surgery facility was recently handed over at Prince Charles Hospital.
Led by HLM Architects, this latest phase has delivered a modernised and efficient surgical environment, reinforcing Prince Charles Hospital’s role as a key healthcare hub for the Cwm Taf Morgannwg region. The refurbishment covers 1,600m² of space, enhancing the capabilities of the existing Phase 1 and 2 operating theatres and further improving the hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.
The new Day Surgery provides 24 second-stage recovery bays and a suite of essential staff support facilities. The design ensures a smooth, efficient patient journey, from arrival through to recovery, with an existing entrance repurposed to provide access to a dedicated pre-assessment area. This area includes a welcoming reception, waiting lounge, and changing rooms – all tailored to support both patient comfort and operational efficiency.
A key feature of the design is its adaptability for future healthcare challenges. Informed by the learnings of the COVID-19 pandemic, the facility includes segregated areas to allow for the safe treatment of all patients, ensuring resilience in the face of future outbreaks or public health emergencies. The project also completes the trauma patient route from the new lift extension, improving clinical pathways and response times for emergency care teams.
Mohammed Ul-Haq, Associate, HLM Architects, commented:
“We’re incredibly proud to have reached this latest milestone in the redevelopment of Prince Charles Hospital. This facility not only supports the clinical needs of today but is also designed with adaptability in mind to respond to future challenges in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg region. The collaboration across the project team has been vital in delivering such a high-quality, patient-focused environment.”
This third phase marks a continuation of the Welsh Government’s long-term investment in healthcare infrastructure across the region. With the completion of the new Day Surgery unit, patients in Merthyr Tydfil and the wider area can expect improved access to care, reduced waiting times, and an overall enhanced experience. The handover also marks a successful partnership with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board and NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership – Specialist Estates Services colleagues.
The Day Surgery is now fully operational, marking another major step forward in transforming Prince Charles Hospital into a leading facility for modern healthcare delivery.
