Thames Christian School and Battersea Chapel has received a Highly Commended recognition at the prestigious 2025 Civic Trust Awards, placing the project amongst a select group of built environment exemplars from over 300 national and international submissions.

Announced during the Civic Trust Awards’ 66th Anniversary Ceremony, held on Friday 4th April in Altrincham and hosted by CTA Patron George Clarke, this recognition honours projects that make a significant contribution to the quality, accessibility and appearance of the built environment.
Designed by Henley Halebrown and delivered by HLM Architects, the co-located independent secondary school and Baptist chapel stands as a powerful symbol of civic contribution and architectural excellence. Situated in the heart of Wandsworth’s York Gardens regeneration area, the 6-storey development provides a tranquil, thoughtfully designed environment that serves both educational and spiritual functions. Accommodating 430 pupils, including provision for SEN admissions and a workplace nursery, the school also acts as a vital hub for community engagement and connection.
The Civic Trust Awards panel praised the project for its ability to respond creatively to spatial and environmental constraints, creating a dual-use development that integrates seamlessly into the urban context. Judges noted: “This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can respond to environmental and spatial constraints to successfully create a dual-use development in an urban context.”
This latest honour follows an impressive series of accolades for the building, including the RIBA London Award and RIBA National Award in 2024. These awards collectively highlight the project’s balance of creativity, functionality and lasting social impact.
From its dignified façade to its uplifting internal courtyards, every design decision has been made with intention. The building prioritises natural light, spatial harmony, and the preservation of views, including the careful positioning of the entrance courtyard to retain mature trees. The chapel’s inspiring interior provides a space for reflection and community gathering, while the school’s calm and inclusive design supports students’ learning, development and wellbeing.
