James McCune Smith Learning Hub in Glasgow was Highly Commended in the Inspiring Learning Spaces category at this year’s Education Estates Awards.

“This world-leading learning and teaching facility puts technology, connectivity and accessibility at the heart of the learning experience.”

The awards, now in their 9th year, were held in Manchester on the 12 October, celebrate excellence and achievement in education.

The ‘Inspiring Learning Spaces’ category recognises innovation in the creation of inspiring spaces that help to promote different and new ways of learning and teaching and that can be easily replicated across the education estate. The criteria focused on how projects make positive impact, both to users and the wider community and environment. The Glasgow studio worked closely with the University of Glasgow and the building users to create the James McCune Smith Learning & Teaching Hub, emphasising the student experience to provide an environment that is open and accessible for all. The new learning and teaching hub forms the initial phase University’s expansion programme and creates a signature gateway building at the heart of the expanded campus based on active learning pedagogies.

Philip Watson, Director & Head of Design; “We’re delighted that the James McCune Smith Learning Hub has been Highly Commended at the Education Estate Awards. This world-leading learning and teaching facility puts technology, connectivity and accessibility at the heart of the learning experience. It will support a motivated, vibrant, and diverse community of learners and academics. As a team, we’re very proud of this project. It’s a building that speaks of the University’s inclusive ambitions and of cultural heritage of the city itself.”
