Having joined HLM in 1989 as a graduate, Michael has been an integral part of the team for over three decades. Throughout this time, he has combined strong technical expertise with a deep appreciation for thoughtful, high-quality design, successfully delivering major projects across a wide range of sectors and regions, most notably in justice and defence. A career highlight was serving as project director on the RIBA award-winning Queen’s Cancer Centre in Hull, where he had the privilege of meeting Her Majesty the Queen at its official opening.
Michael was invited to join the board of directors in 2017 and, in April 2024, was appointed as managing director. He is passionate about the future of the business, but equally about the people who drive it forward. Michael believes that the success of HLM lies not only in the quality of its work, but in the talent, commitment, and wellbeing of its people—something he takes great pride in championing every day.
In his role, he is dedicated to strengthening the operational side of the practice while nurturing the collaborative and supportive culture that makes HLM unique. For Michael, success is not measured solely by the projects delivered, but also by the positive experiences of the people who make them possible. He is committed to fostering collaboration, encouraging growth and development, and maintaining a balance between ambition and wellbeing across the team.
Michael is passionate about nurturing HLM’s culture to ensure it remains an inspiring and supportive workplace. He believes that people do their best work when they feel valued, respected, and motivated, and he works hard to create an environment where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
