Improving the healthcare estate

Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil has served communities across Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Powys since 1978. Our multi-phased redevelopment project future-proofs their vital acute services through a combination of retrofit, refurbishment, newly constructed facilities and departments.

Our architecture, landscape and interior design teams collaborated to deliver cohesive, patient-focused spaces, carefully phased to minimise disruption within the live hospital environment. Aligning with the hospital’s long-term vision, we’re creating a modern, efficient healthcare estate that supports both clinical excellence and community wellbeing.

Social Value

The  project created exceptional social value beyond its clinical upgrades. We embedded community-focused initiatives throughout, including job creation, educational outreach, and apprenticeship programmes. Long-term, the hospital’s modernised infrastructure and permanent training centre will ensure continued professional development and improved care.

This holistic approach reflects ours and clients’ shared commitment to community wellbeing, sustainability, and lasting social impact beyond the built environment.

Sustainability

We significantly reduced embodied carbon and cost at Prince Charles Hospital by prioritising retrofit over rebuild.

Our design preserved existing infrastructure while integrating new energy-efficient systems, including rooftop plantrooms supported by external lattice frames.

Our sustainability toolkit and R&D expertise guided low-impact material choices and operational efficiencies. And the phased redevelopment approach minimised disruption and extended the building’s lifecycle further.

These strategies reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship, delivering a resilient healthcare estate that exceeds expectations and supports long-term sustainability for the local community and NHS.

Our healthcare expertise shaped cost-effective, patient-first environments. The redevelopment of Prince Charles Hospital combines retrofit, refurbishment, newly constructed facilities and departments – all within a live hospital site. A unique challenge for our design team, and to ensure minimal disruption to the working hospital, we stayed in close consultation and collaboration with our client and key stakeholders.

A transformative three phase redevelopment

This ambitious project re-imagines the overall site, adding new facilities and departments, and upgrading existing ones.

  • Phase one relocated key services via modular units, enabling safe construction of permanent facilities.

  • Phase two enhanced outpatients, therapy, and surgical departments, improving flow and accessibility.

  • Phase 3 (and beyond) involves the meticulous remodeling of the Centralized Sterilized Storage Decontamination department, back-off-house FM and storage areas, medical records, and central staff change facilities on the ground floor.
