Setting a new benchmark
Our masterplanning, architecture, landscape, and interior design teams took a collaborative approach to create this resilient, people-focused environment, setting a new benchmark for defence training.
The campus comprises a training college, a museum honouring military heritage, accommodation for personnel and their families, and leafy public realm and village green for community wellbeing.
Social value
From the outset of the Worthy Downs project we focused on stakeholder engagement, working collaboratively with Skanska to embed design thinking early on, and leading multi-layered stakeholder engagement with DIO, MoD and ARTD, ensuring every voice shaped the outcome.
Responding to a specialist brief, we carried out targeted research, including mock-ups, site visits and immersive experiences across defence environments. Every design decision was informed by our deep understanding of operational needs, combined with our education sector expertise, and HLM’s social value and sustainability focus.
This project goes beyond bricks and mortar. Together with our clients, we’ve created a place that supports learning, improves wellbeing, celebrates legacy, and delivers lasting value for defence personnel, their families and the wider community.

Sustainability
Sustainability was embedded into Worthy Downs from day one, delivering tangible, lasting benefits. We used our in-house environmental expertise and digital toolkit to model energy performance, reduce overheating and optimise orientation. The training college achieved BREEAM Excellent, exceeding MoD expectations.
Our BIM-led cut and fill strategy meant zero excavation waste left site. We enhanced biodiversity through ecological corridors and reused 100% of site materials. Roof-mounted PVs contribute to long-term energy efficiency. By combining smart design, technical rigour and collaboration with Arup and Skanska, we’ve delivered a resilient, future-proof campus that supports both people and planet.

HLM’s phased masterplan enabled early capital release, accelerating delivery, reducing disruption, and maximising value.
Our campus design balances the armed forces identity with openness and flexibility, creating a place that supports learning, wellbeing and operational efficiency. The masterplan was shaped by real-world research, thorough stakeholder engagement and technical rigour – ensuring every decision was purposeful.
We prioritised visible quality and sustainable outcomes. From the landmark college building to the layered public realm, every element is designed to work together; a practical training environment that’s built to last.
