We are excited to continue our awards news at HLM Architects, having been shortlisted in four categories at the Structural Timber Awards 2024. These four shortlistings recognise creative use of timber for efficient, inspiring and sustainable structures.

Architect of the Year
Having won the Structural Timber Awards Architect of the Year in 2023 we are delighted to have been shortlisted again in 2024. We have consistently demonstrated innovation and excellence in sustainable design, with timber as a defining material in several completed projects across the UK. Trent View College and the Sandhurst Band Practice Facility exemplify our creative and technical prowess in using timber technology to create efficient, sustainable structures that inspire building users. Being named as finalists for the second year further highlights our expertise in delivering better places for people through our innovative use of timber.
Project of the Year: Sandhurst Band Practice Facility
Shortlisted for the Project of the Year Award, Sandhurst Band Practice Facility at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst serves 54 Army musicians. This innovative project combines new construction with the refurbishment of historic buildings, creating a unique blend of modern and traditional architecture. Sandhurst Band Practice Facility is one of the first within the Ministry of Defence estate to use ultra-low carbon Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and a hybrid widespan steel portal frame. The facility’s design, which includes visible grade CLT elements and state-of-the-art acoustics, provides a unique military and educational environment.
Education Project of the Year: Trent View College
Trent View College, shortlisted for Education Project of the Year, is a new post-16 college, catering for 60 students with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) designed to remove barriers to learning and help young people develop important life and employability skills, preparing them for adulthood. The co-educational school exemplifies excellence in inclusive design, resulting in a thriving college that meets students’ needs. Trent View is one of the first SEND facilities in the world to have been designed to Passivhaus standards
One of the unique design features of Trent View College is its use of structural timber, specifically Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels, in its superstructure and roof. This choice was pivotal in achieving the stringent airtightness and high-performance thermal envelope required by Passivhaus standards. Its innovative use of structural timber and CLT, highlights its commitment to Passivhaus standards, and a collaborative design process culminated in a state-of-the-art facility ready to inspire and support its students.
Low Energy Project of the Year: Trent View College
In addition to being nominated for the Education Project of the Year, Trent View College is also shortlisted in the Low Energy Project of the Year category. This nomination with B&K Structures recognises Trent View College as a beacon of sustainable and inclusive education. By integrating advanced sustainable design principles with a deep understanding of SEND requirements, the college sets a new standard for educational facilities.
Reflecting on the shortlisting, Philip Watson, Chair and Head of Design, commented, “Being nominated for four awards at this year’s Structural Timber Awards is outstanding and a testament to our team’s dedication to sustainability and innovation. Our sustainable approach to design inevitably leads us to exploit timber as a regenerative material. Combining this material with an offsite manufactured approach to construction makes resultant buildings greener, more cost effective, safer to construct, and more naturally appealing.”
