HLM have two projects shortlisted in the British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA), in the Commercial Project of the Year and the Social Infrastructure Project of the Year categories.
Following on from being awarded two sustainability-focussed accolades at last year’s BCIA awards, HLM are delighted to be shortlisted again this year this time with the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) and The Wave.
NMIS, shortlisted in the Commercial Property of the Year category, is an industry-led international centre of manufacturing expertise where industry, academia and the public-sector support bodies work together to transform skills, productivity and innovation making Scotland a global leader in advanced manufacturing and a magnet for investment. The design of the building provides an open, dynamic space. The creative use of timber and offsite manufacture epitomises the innovative functionality of the project, allowing for future changes as the needs of the users evolve. Shared access to specialist areas includes dedicated meeting spaces to accommodate up to ninety staff. NMIS is a key meeting place and incubator to serve industry, academics, small companies and start-ups, and a hub for manufacturing and complementary sectors.
The Wave, shortlisted in the Social Infrastructure Project of the Year category, is a 6,600sqm building for the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Social Sciences, designed to meet future growth demands to the year 2035 and provide a world class, highly sustainable environment that encourages collaboration and enhances the faculty’s reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The brief for The Wave was to provide a hub for the Faculty of Social Sciences, housing five of its departments in a highly sustainable, collaborative building that gives the faculty an identity. Departments were previously scattered across 12 buildings that had no identity, were very expensive to run, prevented collaborative working and had limited opportunities for growth. Using a local design team who understood the wider project context has resulted in a building that responds to all stakeholder needs and creates true social value. The Wave is a public building that supports students across the whole university and is also a community asset for local residents and the neighbouring hospital. While the pocket parks create much needed public external space the Wave Kitchen hosts Weston Park Cancer Charity Coffee Mornings and provides the perfect venue for patients, friends and colleagues from Weston Park Hospital to come together to chat and support one another.
