The podium
The podium defines the edge of an extended public realm that connects all main arrival points and creates a clear sense of orientation. Its curved spine wall, featuring bespoke artwork co-created with staff and patients, creates a strong visual identity.
The podium also differentiates public and private areas while incorporating a gently sloping, grassed space that forms a secure, calming setting for the CAMHS unit. By uniting functionality, wayfinding, and a welcoming environment, the podium creates a distinctive, quality public realm that gives the hospital its unique character within the campus.
Big brother, little brother
Sitting on the podium, ‘big brother’ houses shared acute facilities, including the Diagnostic and Treatment core and main wards. Vibrantly coloured ‘little brother’ serves as the Children’s Hospital outpatient facility, centred around an active pod space. Positioned within the public realm, it defines entrances to both the RHCYP and DCN, connected by a top-lit atrium and shared street space, creating a lively, welcoming heart for patients, families, and staff alike.
