HLM Architects is delighted to announce that the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE) has won the Silver Award in the ‘Health Building or Project’ category at the Scottish Design Awards 2025. This prestigious accolade highlights the transformative power of architecture in the healthcare and education sectors and celebrates the innovative, sustainable, and collaborative design principles that lie at the heart of LIHE.

This landmark medical teaching facility redefines how research, education, and clinical care can come together to fast-track medical innovation and attract investment from industry partners.
Located within the historic St Thomas’ hospital campus, operated by Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London; LIHE has been carefully designed to respond to its complex urban setting as the building sits in close proximity to Grade I and II listed structures. Its contemporary form and materials are sensitively informed by this historic context, providing a striking yet respectful architectural dialogue with its surroundings.
At the core of the project is the pioneering “Research Eco-system” concept, which brings together clinicians, academics, engineers, entrepreneurs, and industry specialists under one roof. This collaborative environment fosters rapid healthcare innovation and adaptability. Informed by insights gathered through our digital engagement tool, HLM Insight, the design prioritises the user experience, incorporating features such as stable temperatures, natural ventilation, biophilic design, and external views, all proven to enhance focus and wellbeing.
Design Director, Ross Barrett and Architect Peter McLaughlan from the Glasgow Studio were in attendance to accept the Silver Award.
LIHE is BREEAM Excellent certified and meets and exceeds the London Plan’s net zero-carbon requirements, achieving a 35% reduction in regulated carbon emissions beyond current Building Regulations. Through the use of photovoltaic panels, air source heat pumps, and a passive façade that enhances daylight and minimises overheating, the building has also earned an EPC A rating, making it King’s College London’s most sustainable building to date.
